In Dutch public secondary education, there is no mandatory subject dedicated to personal development and worldview education. At the same time, the revised 2020 law on citizenship education emphasizes the necessity of incorporating elements of worldview education into the broader framework of citizenship education. This study examines the content, methods, and skills offered within school-specific citizenship (or worldview education) courses in public schools. The findings indicate that these courses focus on societal issues, personal development, and worldview education, and that they employ specific pedagogical methods and skills, such as reflection, critical thinking, and decision-making. Based on these findings , we formulate recommendations for how public schools may implement a school-specific citizenship course that gives structural attention to the person-oriented part of citizenship education.
