Islam, Muslims, freedom of religion, headscarf, secular, neutrality, Muslim QuestionSamenvatting
In Belgium, religious freedom is protected as a fundamental right, as enshrined in the constitution and international treaties. This stands in stark contrast to contemporary debates about Islam in Belgium, where issues of integration, cultural diversity, and security are central. The headscarf ban, Islamic education, the ban on ritual slaughter, the lack of recognition of mosques, and the Muslim Council (formerly Muslim Executive) have all sparked significant debates. How can we reconcile these heated discussions – and the accompanied restrictions – with the religious freedom that every citizen enjoys? Belgian Muslims reject the imposed limits on religious freedom, which has often led to (legal) resistance. They challenge the notion that religion should be excluded from the public sphere and emphasize the societal value religion can offer. This essay relies on the Muslim Question as theoretical framework discussing contemporary challenges in Belgium (i.e. the headscarf ban).
