Samenvatting

The latest edition of God in the Netherlands traces changing patterns of religious experience and church involvement. Although traditional structures are under pressure, subtle shifts point to new forms of religious expression and community building. Within the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, a tension is becoming apparent between institutional decline and renewal. A transition is underway from administrative membership to participatory involvement, for which traditional measuring instruments are inadequate. A reorganization of religion is taking place within a changing society, in which religion and faith are taking on different, less formally recognizable forms and raising new questions about vitality and relevance.
